Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk made the trip to Miami for the F1 Grand Prix this past weekend and took the chance to talk to some of the sport’s higher-ups alongside his son.
Musk met with F1 Chief Stefano Domenicali as well as Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Musk was discussing battery technology as well as aerodynamics during his visit before taking to Twitter to suggest that he might have a good idea for what could come next.
“Fun discussion of aero and battery technology in F1. I proposed a pure EV vs gas/hybrid F1 race,” Musk said. The uncharitable out there immediately responded to point out to Musk that an electric version of F1 already existed. Called Formula E, it’s essentially just that — F1 but electric.
However, it’s possible that Musk made a bad job of wording something different — was he suggesting a race that pitted electric or hybrid vehicles against pure ICE versions of F1 cars? If so, that might not be the worst idea and could certainly make for some interesting racing.
Musk continues to find himself in the spotlight whether it’s thanks to his role at Tesla or Twitter, not to mention the recent explosion of a SpaceX rocket that may or may not have still been a success depending on who you speak with.
