If you’re familiar with the world of the smart thermostat and smart light switch, then you might be aware of the brand Ecobee, because it’s fast becoming one of the most popular around. Now the company is said to be getting ready to expand into the world of cameras, according to a new report.
The news comes after Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny! found new images of a camera that has yet to be announced. It’s a good-looking camera, too, with a black overall aesthetic and a silver base. There’s no details yet as to pricing, specifications, or even a release date, which is a shame, but Zatz does have a reasonable history with getting these kinds of things right. With that in mind, we see little reason to doubt the veracity of this report.
While details are light, given Amazon investment and the existing product line, we can assume the ecobee camera will feature Alexa integration … if not outright control via its own mic, as those amber lights pictured in the company render up top can also flash blue.
We’re hopeful that the new camera will also be part of the HomeKit ecosystem, mainly because Ecobee’s other wares are HomeKit-capable. That would be super interesting, given the slow take up of HomeKit cameras so far, and it would certainly give the Ecobee camera a leg up when compared to the competition.
Ecobee has made a name for itself in the world of the smart thermostat in particular, and is often preferred over more established names like Nest. After expanding beyond thermostats with its own smart switch, it makes plenty of sense that the company would then look to other categories for new products. If a camera is indeed one of those, we can’t wait to learn more about it.
