Apple’s A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, is already faster than the chip that will be in every flagship Android phone next year.
Early benchmarks for the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 show that the A16 Bionic is faster in both single and multi-core tests.
Those tests were spotted by DealNTech, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 managing 1,483 in single-core and 4,709 in multi-core Geekbench runs. By comparison, the iPhone 14’s A16 Bionic chip scored 1,874 in single-core and 5,372 in multi-core tests.
The result is that this year’s flagship iPhone is already faster than the chip that the likes of Samsung will put into its own high-end models, with Apple set to move the needle again with next year’s A17 chip.
Both the A16 Bionic and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are based on TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process and promise improved energy efficiency and reduced power requirements. The Qualcomm chip in particular hopes to be able to run at full tilt for longer than the chip that it will replace, with some Vivo phones expected to be the first to use it. The Vivo X90 range will be announced on November 22, with at least one of the three new phones using Qualcomm’s new fastest chip.
As MacRumors points out, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior VP of worldwide marketing said in September that the competition was years behind. Maybe he wasn’t so far off the mark after all.
