Looks like Electronic Arts may be on its way back to Steam. The publisher’s official Twitter account recently shared a video of a steaming mug with only an ellipses for a caption. Taking that to mean EA is bringing its games back to Valve’s distribution platform may feel like a bit of a stretch, but the speculation has a premise.
Over the past couple of weeks, the web has been rife with similar rumors, largely owing to references found in recent changes made to the Steam database. Said references suggest certain older EA titles may soon be added back to Steam, with premier names such as the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order likely to remain exclusive to the company’s own Origin store. It’s likely EA’s tweet is a cryptic acknowledgement of these findings.
Among the EA titles referenced were 2011’s Dragon Age 2 and 2009’s The Saboteur, with 2016’s Mirror’s Edge Catalyst also having been spotted in a Steam UI redesign teased back in March.
The rumormill had more to offer last week – game developer @RobotBrush tweeted an image referencing a test app that runs Origin games through Steam, suggesting the platforms may be preparing for a partnership akin to the marriage between Steam and Ubisoft’s Uplay launcher, where players will be able to purchase games through the Steam store and play through Origin.
This may seem counterproductive to some, but is likely to be welcomed by regions where Steam supports regional pricing and Origin doesn’t.
