In an update posted to Twitter a few hours ago, the team behind Dying Light 2 announced that the game’s release has been pushed back indefinitely.
The sequel to Techland’s lauded 2015 survival horror title was initially slated for a Spring 2020 release.
The game is the latest amongst a slew of major releases to have been delayed within the past week, including Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Marvel’s Avengers, and the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077. Similar to the other announcements, the game’s delay has been attributed to a need for further refinement, though Techland’s wording is slightly more vague and the studio didn’t provide a new release window or mention when that information may become available.
We were initially aiming for a Spring 2020 release with Dying Light 2, but unfortunately we need more development time to fulfill our vision. We will have more details to share in the coming months, and will get back to you as soon as we have more information. We apologize for this unwelcome news. Our priority is to deliver an experience that lives up to our own high standards and to the expectations of you, our fans.
While it may simply be a coincidence for this many AAA titles to have been delayed in the space of a few days, one can’t help but think it may have something to do with the next generation of gaming hardware, both in the console and PC space. New GPUs are on the horizon while both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are penned in for a holiday 2020 release. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED, however, dismissed said conjecture, confirming that it had no plans for next-gen variants of the game as yet.
Dying Light 2, like the original, is a sandbox action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. Its predecessor’s parkour-driven traversal, weapon crafting, and unique day-night cycle made it a hit amongst critics and players alike.
The sequel looks set to be much bigger than the original, with the developers having promised over 100 hours of content to go through.
