The Windows 8.1 upgrade is only available as a free option from Windows Store to those currently running Windows 8.
If you are a Windows desktop, notebook or tablet user who opted against getting in on the Windows 8 action from the get-go then worry not. There are still options for any consumers who want to ditch a legacy version of Windows in favor of this latest offering. Those running a computer powered by Windows XP, Windows 7 or even Windows Vista can purchase the Windows 8.1 operating system from the Windows.com/buy website.
A brand new purchased of Windows 8.1 for new users will cost as previously reported $119.99. Power users and those who like to get a little more bang for their buck can choose the Pro version of the OS for $199.99. If digital downloads aren’t your thing and you prefer the secure feeling of owning a DVD based install disc then this option should start to become available this coming Friday from a whole host of physical and online retailers. It may seem like there are a lot of configuration options, but if you have purchased or downloaded Windows 8.1 standard then Microsoft will also offer a Pro version upgrade for $99.99.
