Here’s how you can download Remote Play for PS4 gaming on iOS running iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices.
One lesser known feature of the PlayStation 4 is the ability to Remote Play games officially on either a Mac or a Windows PC. Whether on same network or away, installing the companion Remote Play app on a computer allows gamers to play PS4 games remotely without being near a TV, with the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller plugged into the computer via USB or Bluetooth dongle. It’s a delight to use, and now that Remote Play functionality has unofficially spilled over to iPhone and iPad devices, and in our tests it works pretty well.
Available to download from the App Store for $9.99, R-Play is an app that allows the Remote Play functionality of the PS4 to come to the iPhone and iPad, complete with on-screen touch controls replacing the DualShock 4 controller that would normally be used when gaming. That adds a limitation, but depending on the game being played it really may not matter at all. There is also support for Apple MFi-certified game controllers, too, so that limitation can be offset completely if you own such a controller.
Take the awesome power of your Sony PlayStation 4 console, and give it the portability and convenience of the Nintendo Switch. Stream your PlayStation 4 games to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and play from anywhere. Never again will your gaming be interrupted when someone else needs to use the TV!
DualShock 4 can be used with R-Play as well although the process to set that up is a bit complex.
Just like the official Remote Play app on Windows or Mac, R-Play lets iOS device owners play PS4 games remotely on their devices provided they have the right equipment, such as a PS4 connected to router via LAN cable and an iOS device connected to WiFi on a 5GHz network. There’s ability to connect to Remote Play via Internet too instead of local network with R-Play should gamers wish to.
As for gaming resolution, up to 1080p resolution at 60fps is supported for Remote Play on iOS using R-Play app as long as you own a PS4 Pro. Standard PS4 is capped at 720p. The process to set it all up is pretty easy and only takes few minutes using on-screen in-app wizard.
In our testing, R-Play worked well on an iPad Pro+PS4 Pro+SteelSeries Nimbus controller combo, certainly better than we expected, and while at $10 it is not the cheapest app on the App Store, this may be one of the more interesting one for gamers who want to be able to play their PlayStation 4 games on something like an iPad on the go. That’s a lot of screen to play on!
The app can be downloaded right now from the App Store for $9.99 as mentioned earlier.
