After treating the excited iOS developer community to iOS 7 beta 2 yesterday, Apple has now afforded the same gift to those involved in the Mac OS X developer program, by seeding the second Developer Preview of OS X Mavericks 10.9. OS X Mavericks 10.9 Developer Preview 2 will be available as an update to those who already have the first release installed, or as a new download from the Mac Member Center and comes with the build number 13A497d.
Those who took the opportunity to download the initial beta release of OS X Mavericks 10.9 will be able to update to the newly released preview through the Software Update menu or the Mac App Store. One of the great things about this particular beta rollout of OS X is that the process is handed off to the Mac App Store for installation once the original install package has been downloaded from the relevant developer account. All future updates will be handled by the store thereafter, making it extremely easy for developers to get up and running immediately with what’s new.
Although the Mac is now an extremely profitable line of products for the Cupertino company, it wasn’t that long ago when Steve Jobs was discussing the potential demise of the system. Fortunes have obviously been turned around with Apple taking the opportunity at WWDC to announce that they have a plan in place for the next ten years of OS X naming. For those who missed the keynote, Mavericks is the latest OS X build and includes a number of important improvements, such as tabbed Finder support, the ability to add tags to files for easier indexing and dramatic improvements to the Safari web browser.
Apple is boasting that OS X Mavericks is their greatest step forward yet when it comes to OS X, with over 200 new features supposedly being added to the OS. The implementation of advanced full-screen dual monitor support managed to draw a cheer from the eager WWDC crowd, as did the introduction of the enhanced power functionality that should see users running MacBooks squeezing additional battery life out of their machines. In addition to Mavericks Developer Preview 2 being available for immediate downloaded there are also updates waiting for Xcode 5 and OS X Server.
