Apple has officially released for download macOS 10.14.1, watchOS 5.1, tvOS 12.1 and HomePod 12.1 final into the public domain. These updates mean that all owners of compatible Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and HomePod can start downloading and consuming the latest changes and improvements, right now.
If you are the proud owner of any of the above hardware then you are likely seriously considering jumping right in and grabbing these updates now. Before you do that, let’s have a quick recap of the improvements made with each platform.
macOS 10.14.1: macOS 10.14.1 may be classified as a relatively minor point update but it’s definitely one that’s worth installing. It immediately opens up access to more than 70 new emoji icons as well as Apple’s brand new Group FaceTime functionality offering support for up to 32 participants in a single call. If you want to communicate in pictures with brand new superheroes, food types, or a whole new array of animal characters, then macOS 10.14.1 is a must-have installation for you.
If you have a compatible Mac, or are already running macOS 10.14, then you can grab 10.14.1 directly from the Updates section of the redesigned Mac App Store.
watchOS 5.1: watchOS 5.1 is the latest progress of Apple Watch firmware. Like macOS 10.14.1 and iOS 12.1, it offers support for Apple’s new Group FaceTime functionality as well as exposing all of the new 70-plus emoji characters for rich and visual communications. There is a brand new colorful Watch face type for those who prefer something plain and vibrant, and even a slew of bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements which should make the platform feel faster.
You can grab watchOS 5.1 as an over-the-air (OTA) download directly from the accompanying Watch app on iPhone. You will need to have at least 50% battery and be connected to power to install.
tvOS 12.1: There is not a lot left that Apple can really do with tvOS and that’s evident with this release. Rather than introducing brand new functionality or trying to push the envelope, tvOS 12.1 is about stability and under-the-hood improvements designed to make all compatible Apple TV hardware feel smoother and snappier.
If you have Apple TV 4 or Apple TV 4K, then you can grab the latest tvOS 12.1 upgrade as an over-the-air download directly from within the Apple TV settings.
HomePod 12.1: This one came out of no where. Apple’s official release notes state following changes in this new firmware version for HomePod:
“This update includes general improvements for stability and quality.”
