LEGO’s NINJAGO ARKit app has officially launched on compatible iOS devices. The release comes seven months after the company had first teased the platform during Apple’s 2018 WWDC gathering in California.
With this particular creation, LEGO has taken an interesting tact that doesn’t involve trying to take the iconic LEGO bricks into the digital world. Instead, the company is hoping to persuade parents and consumers to purchase more bricks than before by having a digital world in which the physical and the augmented world can work together to create new and breathtaking experiences.
This approach ensures that people of all ages still get to interact with the stunning physical LEGO bricks and still continue to create but that they also adopt the power of technology as part of that journey.
The app itself is extremely child-friendly and has been built under the LEGO NINJAGO theme to have certain functionality:
Using the popular LEGO NINJAGO theme, this first playground uses AR technology to detect selected physical LEGO NINJAGO Dragon Hunters sets and bring them to life with exciting effects, animations and interactions.
The game uses the multi-user support in Apple’s ARKit technology, allowing two players to connect and play together in the same shared play space.
Users can connect and team up with a friend to battle against the Dragon Hunters, share power-ups and 3D assets, create strategies to withstand the endless waves of Dragon Hunters and even compare high-scores with friends.
In addition to having a key set of features that encourage fusing the physical with the digital and bringing team action and collaboration into the fold, the LEGO ARKit application also has five levels that can be played without any physical LEGO hardware or bricks being purchased, which means that there is no additional financial outlay needed to give this innovation a whirl.
LEGO has also opted against any in-app purchases or in-game marketing material from third-parties. Those wanting to get involved in this augmented world will need a compatible ARKit device, which means that you will need iPhone 6s or newer or iPad 5th-generation or newer.
