Whenever new iDevices emerge, an update to Apple’s iTunes application is usually released around the same time, and today at the Yerba Buena in San Francisco, the Cupertino company has announced iTunes 10.7.
It doesn’t bring a great deal in terms of new features, but does offer some bug fixes and performance enhancements, along with support for iOS 6 and new iPods. And if you have iTunes installed on your computer, it’s highly recommended you update.
iTunes has been updated on numerous occasions over the years, and it is getting a major overhaul in October. More about that here.
The iTunes Store within the app is, at present, little more than a web-browsing experience, and although everything seems to work nicely, Apple will offer deeper integration between iTunes app and iTunes Store in the upcoming October update.
With an iPad Mini rumored to be joining the fray in the next couple of weeks, the pressure on the iTunes app to deliver the goods will be as strong as ever. At present, it’s still a little bit too bloated, and while OS X and iOS have become slicker and more seamless in usability terms over the last few major releases, it’s fair to say iTunes still has a few too many flaws in the current 10.x version.
If you do plan on updating to iTunes 10.7, you can take one of two routes. By far the easiest method is to open Software Update within your current iteration of iTunes and updating that way, although you can also grab the file by heading over to the official downloads page over at Apple’s site. From there, select your particular OS, and let your browser do the rest. Personally, I find the internal method to be much less of a hassle, but then again, some like to keep the .exe / .dmg file stored in a separate location for installing offline, so the choice is yours.
Once you’ve downloaded it, be sure to post a comment if you stumble upon any sneaky hidden treasures or indeed, any lingering bugs that managed to slither through the net.
