We knew it was on its way, and with iOS 5.0.1 seemingly unable to fix widespread iPhone battery problems, Apple no-doubt wanted to get this beta release of iOS 5.1 out the door as quickly as possible.
Now Apple has just seeded the first beta version of iOS 5.1 for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad 1, and iPod touch 3G/4G to the registered developers of iOS Dev Center.
As yet there are no real details as to what Apple has fixed, added or even broken in this first beta release of iOS 5.1, but we’re going to safely assume that battery performance is high on the agenda for the engineers beavering away in Cupertino labs.
Apple’s iOS 5 release, alongside the new iPhone 4S has seen many suffer from greatly reduced battery life, with a variety of possible fixes circulating the internet. When Apple did release its supposed fix in the form of iOS 5.0.1 it became clear that the battery problems many were suffering were actually being caused by more than one bug – a situation that Apple themselves all-but admitted.
Now iOS 5.1 is Apple’s next shot at putting things right.
This release of iOS 5.1 is compatible with all iOS devices, meaning iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners can test the software so long as their devices unique identifier – the UDID – is registered on a developer’s account.
As with all betas like this, we suggest that you only install this release if you need to test your apps with it, and even then we wouldn’t install it on a mission critical device. Apple’s first betas of any release are notorious for being less than rock solid, and we can’t see any reason why this release would be any different.
That said, we’ll be keeping an eye on reports to see how the battery situation progresses over the coming days, as well as doing our own in-house testing of the matter.
Hopefully users will not need to wait too long before they can get their hands on the final release of iOS 5.1, and more importantly, that Apple has successfully squashed these battery bugs for once and for all!
As always, we’ll keep you posted here at RedmondPie.com!
