Following on from a jam-packed “By Innovation Only” iPhone event, Apple has officially released iOS 13.1 beta 3 into the development community. The third beta in the iOS 13.1 release roadmap is available to download right now for all compatible iPhone and iPod touch models.

It was toward the back-end of August that Apple blindsided both the development and testing communities by issuing the first beta of iOS 13.1.

At that time, iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 were progressing nicely, with each platform receiving semi-regular pre-release seeds to put them into the hands of the relevant people. Then, for one reason or another, up popped Apple to throw a spanner in the works by deciding that iOS 13.1 had an important part to play in the progression of iOS 13. Now, it seems that iOS 13.1 is Apple’s sole focus as it hurtles toward a final public release.

With the release of iOS 13.1, Apple reinstated a number of features which had previously been released from some iOS 13 releases. Those using iOS 13.1 were able to once again share ETAs via the Maps app, access the Shortcuts automation tab in the Shortcuts app, and even gain access to audio sharing via AirPods and Powerbeats Pro hardware.

There had been some early indications during the development stages of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 that Apple wouldn’t have both platforms streamlined in time to release when it wanted, which is clearly why iOS 13.1 is in existence. Some of the more complex or troublesome features have been pushed to that release.

We don’t expect iOS 13.1 beta 3 to have any brand new functionality or features included. Instead, as you’d expect from the third beta of a firmware which is due to go into the public domain on September 30, this is all about stability and ironing out any kinks and issues with the features that have been pulled from iOS 13 and put into iOS 13.1. We’re sure Apple won’t want to find itself in a position whereby iOS 13.1 isn’t ready for the intended release date and features have to be pulled once again or delayed even further.

So, with that in mind, iOS 13.1 beta 3 is now available to download as an IPSW file from developer.apple.com or OTA Update from Settings > General > Software Update section of the device itself, so make sure to get your hands on it and test it thoroughly.
