This final public release of iOS 12.1.2 has come at an accelerated pace by Apple and follows hot on the heels of the original developer release just seven days ago.
Apple pushed out the initial developer preview of iOS 12.1.2 on Monday, December 10, 2018, citing that the software contained “bug fixes and improvements”. This is Apple’s typical way of saying that the firmware doesn’t contain any significant feature additions or functionality improvements but that it also doesn’t want to give a granular list of bug fixes and improvements.
In addition to those bug fixes and improvements, Apple has also taken the opportunity to ensure that all relevant devices receive the relevant update via iOS 12.1.2 to comply with a Chinese court ruling that Apple’s Chinese iPhones infringe on a number of patents held by Qualcomm Inc. As we already know, both of these companies have been locked in what is turning into an extremely bitter legal battle, with the latest twist confirming that Apple needs to make changes to ensure that its iPhones in China don’t continue to operate in such a manner that abuses Qualcomm’s patents. iOS 12.1.2 is the release which allows Apple to ensure that is the case and to resolve this relatively minor issue which is part of a larger ongoing case.
Apple had previously stipulated that it was taken the necessary measures to comply with the court ruling and will hope that this release satisfies that. From a consumer perspective, the iOS 12.1.2 release not only covers those legal bases for Apple in regards to its China-based obligations but also introduces a number of bug fixes and improvements which are designed to remove any glitches or hangovers that have occurred since the release of iOS 12.1.1. As a company, Apple is continually looking to make these types of improvements and shows its continued commitment to iPhone and iPad owners. Here’s official changelog of iOS 12.1.2 from Apple:
iOS 12.1.2 includes bug fixes for your iPhone. This update:
– Fixes bugs with eSIM activation for iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max
– Addresses an issue that could affect cellular connectivity in Turkey for iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max
iOS 12.1.2 is available for iPhones only, not iPads.
