Apple today released iOS 14.5 beta 4 to both developers and public beta testers. The release comes two weeks after the third beta was released.
Apple continues to run iOS 14.5 through its beta paces to try and ensure it’s ready for a final release soon enough.
The update is set to bring features online that will be required by the unannounced AirTags item trackers – something Apple is potentially set to announce as soon as next week.
When iOS 14.5 is released to the public alongside watchOS 7.4, users will be able to enjoy a new iPhone unlocking feature that will use an authenticated Apple Watch to unlock the device when a face mask is being worn.
Today’s new beta release carries build number 18E5178a and is thought to be close to a final build. If Apple is indeed set to announce AirTags next week we’d expect iOS 14.5 to be released to the public sooner rather than later – potentially as soon as next Monday or Tuesday.
Other improvements in this release include support for AirPlay 2 when taking part in Fitness+ workouts as well as support for the PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers. Changes to the way the Music app works, including new gestures, will also debut with iOS 14.5 when it is made available worldwide.
