The Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview 5 is now officially out and available to download. The even better news that accompanies the availability of Android 7.0 Nougat DP5 is that it will be the final preview before an official Android 7.0 release is issued to public for compatible and supported devices.
As part of the final push to get Android 7.0 Nougat ready for an official release, Developer Preview 5 contains a number of improvements and additions that keeps it well and truly on the roadmap to launch.
There’s the inclusion of system images for compatible and supported Nexus devices, as well as a slew of other preview devices that will benefit from Android 7.0. Developers also have access to an official emulation of Android 7.0 Nougat to allow them to test and preview their own apps to ensure that they are ready to provide the optimum experience and take advantage of the technologies within Android 7.0.
Developer Preview 5.0 also introduces the latest and final Nougat APIs at API level 24, as well as the latest system behaviours that developers can all take advantage of. As you would also expect from a fifth preview, and certainly from one that precedes an official and final release, DP5 introduces the latest bug fixes and system optimizations across the whole of the Android operating system, as well as all of the pre-installed applications that are part of Android Nougat.
All of those changes sound appealing, and the fact that Android Nougat is in its final Developer Preview is extremely exciting for Android device owners around the world, but just how long can we all expect to wait before the final public release of Android 7.0 hits the wild? There’s no official word from Google on when the final version will actually drop, but based on the company’s own estimated timeline it could come any time before the end of September. Of course, that’s likely to give the company some wiggle room for unforeseen circumstances, meaning that we should hopefully see an official final release before the end of August.
