The second beta of the new iOS 5.1 firmware has just been seeded to the registered developers of the iOS Dev Center.
Although iOS 5 is a marked update on iOS 4 with the likes of Siri, Newsstand and Notification Center, it hasn’t landed without its problems. The supposedly software-induced battery issues have plagued many iDevice users – particularly those trying to enjoy Apple’s latest smartphone – the iPhone 4S.
One of the criticisms so far with all of the Cupertino company’s mobile OS releases is the lack of editing options, so the Photo Stream deletion capabilities added in this build of iOS 5.1 are a massive plus.
From the official change-log:
Photos taken using iOS 5.1 can be deleted from Photo Stream on your device and will be removed automatically from Photo Stream on your other iOS 5.1 devices. Older photos can be manually deleted from your iOS 5.1 devices.
There are a whole host of other bug fixes and security improvements, which can only spell trouble for jailbreak fans. Let’s hope the purported 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak, reported to be working on some of the A4 devices, does bear fruit and inject some fresh hope into the rather stagnated open-source community.
With so many betas before the final push back in October, it’s hardly a surprise that we’re already heading for our third iteration of iOS 5. Let’s just hope this particular release carries few noticeable bugs, and makes headlines only for the right reasons.
As usual, this is a developer-only release, and without meaning to appoint ourselves as the guardians of your moral conscience, it doesn’t cost a great deal ($99 a year) to sign up and get first dibs on Apple’s latest software releases. Avoid torrent and war*z bootlegs like the plague, for the fruit company is more than wise to them, and your device’s functionality could be compromised as a result.
Available for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPad 2, and the iPod touches, the new iOS 5.1 Beta 2 can be downloaded directly from iOS Dev Center via the link given below.
