If you’d been hoping that Apple would announce a new Apple Watch with blood pressure monitoring later this year, it looks like you could be disappointed.
A new report suggests that we might be waiting until 2024 at the earliest for such a feature to come to Apple’s wearables.
A new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that while Apple is indeed working on making such a feature a possibility, problems with accuracy have so far prevented it from being pushed into a finished product.
That means that while we’ve been hearing rumors of the feature for years, the company remains unable to release it due to a lack of confidence in the readings that it creates.
The company has teams working on an updated sensor and software for the Apple Watch that would determine if a user has high blood pressure, but accuracy has been a challenge during testing, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private. The feature has been planned for at least four years, but it’s probably two years away from hitting the market and may slip until 2025, they said. Apple’s shares were up about 1% at 9:41 a.m. in New York.
Apple is set to announce a new Apple Watch, dubbed the Apple Watch Series 8, later this year. It now seems unlikely that there will be new sensors as part of that updated hardware, although a faster processor and updated software will surely be a given.
Apple is also rumored to be updating its Apple Watch SE this year, while a new rugged Apple Watch is also rumored for a 2022 release.
