Apple isn’t expected to release an updated 24-inch iMac until late 2023, according to a new report. And that’s at the earliest — we could be waiting even longer.
With Apple’s iMac still running the M1 chip, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said via his weekly Power On newsletter that he hasn’t seen any indication that there will be an M2 version.
That means that the next iMac to ship could well be the M3 version and that chip won’t be ready until much later in 2023.
Gurman’s comments came after he was asked about Apple’s iMac plans by a reader. For now, his suggestion for potential iMac buyers is to “sit tight,” with there being little option for anyone who already owns one of the colorful 24-inch models today.
The M3 chip is expected to use TSMC’s newest 3nm manufacturing process. That should allow the chips to be more energy efficient which in turn should ensure that they run cooler. Those two facts have the potential to allow Apple to make the chips faster, improving the future 24-inch iMac’s overall performance.
The current M1 iMac was released in April 2021 and hasn’t seen ar revision since then. We also haven’t heard anything official about what Apple plans to offer in the place of the 27-inch 5K iMac and iMac Pro, two machines that have now been discontinued for a good long while.
