Panoramic photography has experienced a rather staggered start in the mobile spectrum, and although Apple toyed with the idea of implementing a panorama mode as a native feature to iOS 5, it never made the final cut. Much like 3DTV in a way, it yields some awesome results, but the jury remains out as to whether it has a large-scale future.
Aside from Apple’s half-hearted bite at the panoramic pie, there are plenty of apps catering to 360-degree shots over at the App Store, and DMD Panorama is a wonderful (and free for a limited time) option for iDevice users.
It works in pretty much the same manner as any other 360-degree snapper. Upon launching the program, you’ll be met with a fairly simple inventory of tools, and all you need do is tap the camera icon and slowly rotate your device in a circular motion in order to capture the details of your panoramic picture. In order to ensure you have done the full 360 degrees, you have to align a yin and yang to complete a yinyang symbol, adding a somewhat irrelevant, but strangely quite fun aspect to proceedings.
The key to any such app is always its ability to stitch the photo together accurately and smoothly. Having spent a great deal of time waiting for similar apps to process my image – only to find the final product is choppy and rough – it’s refreshing that DMD actually stitches the image together without seam, thus rendering it ideal for capturing anything from picturesque landscapes to rooms within a house.
Its 3 million downloads speak volumes, and it’s certainly one of the most accurate, smooth and quick apps we’ve stumbled across in this category. If you like a bargain, well this $1.99 is free for a very limited time, so you’d be foolish to miss out on what is an excellent promotional offer.
I have only been using it for around a half an hour, and I am already pretty amazed by how well it performs. Even if it wasn’t free, it’s still the strongest in its field, so check out the link below for the download – before it becomes paid again.
