Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has confirmed that an upcoming software update will provide developers with access to the full power of the iPhone 13’s ProMotion display.
The hype was real as far as iOS 15 and Apple’s brand new iPhone 13 were concerned. Not only were punters looking forward to getting their hands on iOS 15 and all of the features within, but they were also super-excited about the brand new iPhone 13 Pro that comes equipped with the ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
All hype aside, the initial testing didn’t look too good with a number of users unable to force third-party non-Apple apps to refresh beyond 60Hz. That testing caused not only initial panic but also concern about whether or not it would be a permanent issue.
Now, Apple has moved quickly to clarify the situation and confirm that a software update will resolve the issue and give third-party developers access to the full power of the ProMotion display on the iPhone 13 Pro.
Apple has informed developers that they will need to include a brand new key within the bundled info.plist file that ships with all third-party apps that are submitted to the App Store. The company has also stated that it will release documentation in the near future to fill in any blanks that developers may have about the process. Additionally, an impending software update will also fix an issue with Apple’s Core Animation framework that is currently preventing animations derived from that framework from refreshing at 120Hz.
In order to maintain the best battery life possible and remain as power-efficient as possible, developers will need to proactively opt-in-in to support 120Hz on the ProMotion display if they are building something that has customized rendering, such as releasing a graphics-intensive game.
For any developers out there, Apple will release additional documentation relating to these processes in due course.
