The Nintendo Switch is already one of our favorite gaming consoles ever thanks to its combination of awesome first-party titles and the portability that only it can offer, but if you’ve found yourself wishing that it could do just a little bit more, you’re in luck after it was announced that developers Billy Laws and Max Keller have been able to somehow get Android running on the console.
Android Q isn’t even ready for use on phones yet, but the developers have been able to get their hands on an early build ahead of its announcement later this year. They then found a way to get it running on the Switch and, amazingly, things like WiFi, Bluetooth, and even the Joy-Cons are all working just fine.
It’s not all good news, though. Proper GPU support isn’t quite where it needs to be just yet, and that means that not all games will work. The developers behind this feat of magic have also not made it clear as to whether the microSD card or USB-C ports are working, which might temper our excitement slightly. Still, the fact that Android is running on a Nintendo Switch at all is something that we don’t think we’re going to grow tired of for a while yet.
It’s so early in development that this isn’t ready for us all to enjoy just yet, but the fact it’s possible should give us all a warm, fuzzy feeling to be getting on with. We doubt Nintendo is quite as pleased, though. Manufacturers don’t usually appreciate their software being hacked or tinkered with.
