CoolStar – the highly acclaimed and loved developer of the Electra jailbreak for iOS 11.0 through iOS 11.1.2 – has created his own mic drop moment. The developer appears to have announced that he is quitting iOS jailbreak development via Twitter before entirely deleting his account and disappearing from the social stratosphere.
As we all know, CoolStar and his select few associates have been working tirelessly on the aforementioned Electra jailbreak which is built upon the async_wake exploit in order to liberate Apple’s 64-bit devices running iOS 11.0 through iOS 11.1.2.
Multiple builds of it have been pushed out into the public domain, as well as a recently updated version which was issued to a select few developers in order to test out the Cydia installation functionality and ensure that their packages were updated with iOS 11 compatibility. Everything seemed perfectly fine and on track for a public release, until yesterday.
You may remember that we brought you the rather disheartening news that Electra RC1 was actually leaked into the public domain and offered for widespread download when it was only intended to be offered to a select few developers. It’s understandable that any developer would be disheartened and discouraged when their hard work is leaked and trust is broken ahead of the planned release schedule, which is likely to have a rather large bearing on the decision to quite the jailbreak community. Not just that, he also announced that he would be switching over to Android as he wasn’t impressed with anything Apple released after iPhone 6s.
If you have been following the drama unfold on Twitter, CoolStar had been involved in a social media spat with a particular developer who he seemed to be accusing of profiting from the aforementioned leak of Electra RC1.
If his exit from the jailbreak community is accurate, then it could definitely be a sign of things to come as we watch talent dwindle and move away from creating jailbreaks and software. And if that is the case, then it’s very difficult to argue, especially when you take into account the ungrateful nature of a lot of the community and the constant hassle and abuse that developers and security researchers face.
Even though CoolStar has deleted his Twitter account, we still hope he’s quietly working on finishing Electra jailbreak for iOS 11 with Cydia bundled before moving on from jailbreak community, and iOS as a whole, over to Android.
