We got the pleasant surprise of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 8 – 8.1, courtesy of Chinese jailbreak outfit Pangu. Getting it up and running has been a bit of a laborious task thus far, with the manual installation of Cydia necessary at this point in time, but that’s not the main limitation. Cydia Substrate, support framework for many major tweaks and apps such as WinterBoard, wasn’t immediately compatible with the newly-jailbroken iOS 8, but with Cydia author Jay Freeman aka Saurik having made the necessary fixes, Substrate has now been deemed ready for prime time.
Of course, since Saurik has had scarcely 24 hours to make the adjustments, there are a few kinks. Notably, users will need to respring their device after every reboot for Substrate to load extensions, so if your device is rebooted or powered down at any point, ensure you run a quick respring so that many of your tweaks can begin functioning properly once more.
As explained in the release notes, the necessity to respring is not strictly a Cydia Substrate issue, but rather a problem that has arisen due to "limitations in Pangu." At present, both the initial version of Pangu (1.0) and the follow up version 1.0.1 have the same limitation, and so no matter which you have used to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you will need to get into the habit of respringing post-reboot for the time being.
It’s worth pointing out that Pangu8 is still a very new jailbreak solution and it could take some time before it’s up to the standard of the last Pangu tool we used all those months ago. With Saurik now on the case, though, it shouldn’t be long before the Cydia side of the deal has been seen to, and once that’s happened, the authors of the many great tweaks, apps and jailbreak themes can then begin working their magic.
It also important to note that not every tweak released for iOS 7.x will work on 8.x right now. Most developers will have to update their tweaks to make them compatible with iOS 8.x and the new Cydia Substrate.
You must already have Cydia installed before you can update the Substrate to latest version 0.9.5013. If you haven already, follow the guides below to jailbreak and install Cydia:
Once Cydia is installed, navigate to Cydia –> Changes and then tap on “Upgrade” from the top right to begin installing the updated version of Cydia Substrate.
