Last year Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that the Cybertruck “will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes and even seas that aren’t too choppy” and was understandably mocked at the time.
And while few would suggest taking a $100,000 truck into water, it seems that there might at least be some truth to the claims.
According to a new report, the Cybertruck has a ‘Wade Mode’ that “Raises ride height and pressurizes battery when driving through water.” The option to enable it can be found in the Cybertruck’s Off-Road Baja Settings, according to one post on X.
As Electrek notes, battery packs are normally capable of withstanding water for a short period of time, but it seems that Tesla has chosen to pressurize the batteries in order to help keep water out.
It isn’t immediately clear what difference that will make in real-world use, but the fact that the option to pressurize the battery packs at all suggests that the feature must be useful in at least some situations.
Although, again, we’re not sure we’d be taking a Cybertruck into water deep enough for the chance of water incursion to be too much of a problem. Especially since there’s no telling what the warranty situation would be here.
