One of the great things about the third-gen iPad is the fact that apps, images and artistic type features look stunning on the high-resolution display. The Concepts app from TopHatch is a great example of an artistic based app that makes perfect use of every pixel on the iPad, allowing users to mockup unique and stunning creations directly on the device.
The whole app is based around capturing the artistic nature that comes with freehand sketching and combining it with the precision which we usually see in technical drafting. It’s very unusual to see this much effort put into an app on the iPad, with most drawing apps simply offering different pen types or brushes rather than actually looking into the intricacies of how it can be made as powerful as possible for those who use it.
Concepts features an extremely minimalist toolbar that sits within a clean and almost clinical interface that is designed to allow users to focus on the task at hand rather than be distracted by a cluttered UI. The interface is also built around simple gestures that allow the user to hide or show the toolbar with simple left and right swipes. The development team have gone to great lengths to make sure that lines and strokes drawn down are always smooth with vector based graphics, which makes artistic creations stunning to look at even when zoomed right in.
As you would expect from a drawing app like this, multiple pen types and sizes are also offered within Concepts as well as a variety of ink colors and the ability to create concept galleries that can be visualized in a side scrolling format. The advanced eraser features also make it extremely easy to make even the slightest changes to a drawing. The app also has pretty fun and useful presentation based features built right in that allow galleries and concepts to be beamed to an Apple TV on the same network using AirPlay technology.
Concepts is a free of charge download for the iPad running iOS 5 or above and comes with the option of an in-app purchased of $1.99 to enable precision drawing mode.
