One ambitious concept maker has crafted an interesting render of what a Google Glass-esque product might look like if Apple’s design team was at the helm. It features, among other perks, a micro projector that beams content directly onto the lens, and while it seems far-fetched that such a slimline, stylish look could be achievable at this point in time, the designer suggests that Apple’s own face computer could be something to consider in years to come.
The major companies in the tech. industry seem to go tit-for-tat when it comes to new products and innovations. Google’s Android Wear, for example, was swiftly followed up with the announcement of Apple Watch only last month, but whilst this emerging wearables category is on the cusp of a boom, there has been little indication that Apple will follow its Mountain View counterpart in the field of head-mounted gizmos. Google Glass has been at the forefront of digital innovation over the past couple of years, but Apple CEO Tim Cook has been skeptical of its consumer-level credentials, and as such, it’s unlikely that the Mac maker will indulge any time soon.
Still, this hasn’t stopped the folks at the German blog Handy Bus from dreaming, and the Apple Glass concept is an intriguing if unrealistic one. Essentially, it looks like a pair of subscription lenses with a small structure attached to one side à la Google Glass, although unlike the search giant’s own version, the mechanical element is a lot more compacted.
Also, the projection of the visual software onto the lens, as opposed to the tiny display of Google Glass, is a very imaginative idea, and with an in-built camera, one would be able to navigate, take photos, videos, and essentially carry out tasks as they would with Google Glass.
There’s also a microphone and, close to the ears, a speaker system, which offers the potential for Siri / voice control, voice notes, and even the ability to process calls on the fly.
There hasn’t really been much word on Apple entertaining such a product, but it’s very likely that at least some time and resources have been put into turning a concept like this into a reality.
What do you make of this design – could you see Apple challenging Google et al in years to come?
