Apple has long been rumored to be working on a new HomePod that also has a display built into it and it appears that such a thing has again been hinted by the recent release of a third tvOS 17.4 beta.
This beta includes mention of an unknown device labeled as Z314 that is capable of running tvOS, according to a new report.
That 9to5Mac report says that the device appears to be powered by the A15 Bionic chip and is currently being tested internally.
Based on our findings, the unreleased “Z314” device is powered by an A15 Bionic chip, which interestingly is the same as the iPad mini 6. Code reveals that there are internal development and also production versions of this device under test, which suggests that it may have reached an advanced stage of development.
The latest tvOS 17.4 beta also includes new SwiftUI frameworks to the HomePod’s software which could suggest that new interfaces are being designed — a notable point when you remember that no HomePod currently has a display on which Apple can show any of those interfaces.
It still isn’t entirely clear what a HomePod with a display could be like or when it might ship, but there are other smart speaker devices on the market similar to what Apple appears to have in mind.
The Echo Show is a prime example of what can be done with such a form factor and Apple shipping a HomePod with FaceTime and streaming content support could be a popular move.
