Climate change isn’t a subject that is going to go away any time soon, no matter how much some people might like it to. Recently, UK-based CDP sought to grade major companies based on their environmental awareness, with thirty US-companies subsequently receiving an A-grade, one of which was Apple.
In order to come up with its grades, CDP asked changes to provide records based on their own environmental impact as well as any business opportunities or risks that climate change may bring to the fore.
Apple was one of the many to respond, with the company pointing out that it believes the iPhone will become increasingly important to those who are in the midst of natural disasters.
“As people begin to experience severe weather events with greater frequency, we expect an increasing need for confidence and preparedness in the arena of personal safety and the well-being of loved ones,” the company wrote. Its mobile devices “can serve as a flashlight or a siren; they can provide first aid instructions; they can act as a radio; and they can be charged for many days via car batteries or even hand cranks.”
On the subject of potential threats to their businesses, Intel, Coke, and AT&T all responded as did Disney. The entertainment company believes that increasing worldwide temperatures will have an impact on the number of people attending its attractions, while both Intel and Coke are concerned about droughts affecting their businesses in the future.
AT&T also noted that wild fires and hurricanes could mean that it will have to spend more money in order to maintain its network in the future.
Apple in particular has been outspoken about the environment, and the work it is doing to maintain it. The company recently confirmed that all of its worldwide facilities are now running on 100% renewable energy, for example.
