Once again, folks, it’s that same old cliché – another day, another tweak; and yet again, another tweak aimed at enhancing the usability of Siri – Apple’s answer to Halo’s Cortana.
Although frequently personified, it’s important to remember that Siri is just a product of technology, and thus the sentences spoken do not flow as they would in conversation with, say, a human being, for example.
The default accent of Siri – at least the British and American versions – are quite monotonous; almost to the point of annoyance. In fact, they can sometimes reflect the drivel heard when speaking to an automated service of companies whom cannot be bothered to speak directly to customers or at the very least, out-source to a willing workforce.
To break the never-ending stream of samey utterances, the tweaksters have created the remedy – as usual. If you’d prefer to hear Siri speak in, say, a French accent, the AnyVoice tweak will allow you to do so. Of course, not everybody wants to listen to Monsieur Français; in which case there are over 40 other accents to try out and enjoy.
As you may expect, some of the accents are more on-point than others, and if you’ve a knack for spotting out an accent, you’ll immediately be able to tell which ones I’m referring to.
It’s available over at the ModMyi Repo – a default in your list of Cydia sources unless you’ve decided to manually remove it.
With Siri still in beta stage, many of its features are still a little rough around the edges, and it’s by no means the finished article. Hopefully, as Apple adds features and expands its device reach in the coming months, we’ll see more languages and better usability – in turn making voice-recognition an integral part of the iOS experience.
You will obviously need to jailbreak your device to install this tweak. For jailbreaking iPhone 4S and iPad 2, you can simply follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe on Windows or Mac. For those of you with iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touches can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to untether jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.
