Here’s how to check iPad battery health and cycles without jailbreak, complete with details.
If you own an iPad and you’re wondering just how many charging cycles its battery has gone through, you’re in luck because someone has created a shortcut that can give you the answer.
Normally you’d need to reach out to Apple for help or install an app to find out what your current battery percentage is, or how many charge cycles the battery has experienced.
But a shortcut can work that out for you right now, and it’s absolutely free.
The shortcut, named Battery Stats can be downloaded thanks to this Reddit thread, and it works well. What it actually does, is that it looks at iPadOS 16 logs and then pulls out the information that tells you your battery capacity and charge cycles.
That log file is normally found in the Settings app, but you’d also have to manually find the strings that you’re looking for. This shortcut does all of that for you.
This kind of thing is important because all batteries, no matter how careful you are, will degrade. The battery capacity reduces over time, and the total number of charge cycles can impact that. A charge cycle isn’t necessarily when the battery reaches 0% and then is charged to 100%, however.
Here’s how Apple describes it.
Apple lithium-ion batteries work in charge cycles. You complete one charge cycle when you’ve used (discharged) an amount that equals 100% of your battery’s capacity — but not necessarily all from one charge. For instance, you might use 75% of your battery’s capacity one day, then recharge it fully overnight. If you use 25% the next day, you will have discharged a total of 100%, and the two days will add up to one charge cycle.
However, it’s important to also remember that batteries are consumables and that you’re probably better just using your iPad as needed rather than trying to look after the battery to the point of degrading the user experience.
Enjoy your iPads, folks!
