Mobile devices like the iPhone, iPad – and to some extent the iPod touch – have made us all more socially aware and allow us to interact with people around the world with ease. It’s human nature to interact with others and express our social sides, which is one of the reasons why social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Path have managed to ingrain themselves in our lives. But what about those social beavers who either happen to travel a lot and want to see what’s going on around them or just want to discover new and topical events going on in their hometown? CalendApp could be the perfect tool.
The app itself is officially described as the “biggest events search engine on the App Store“, and although we aren’t in a position to refute that claim, but we think of it more as an events based, socially driven iPhone app that allows the user to uncover some fantastic going-ons wherever they may happen to be. The power and beauty of CalendApp is really in the attention to detail, the masses of data that is indexed and made available behind-the-scenes and – dare we say it – the interesting user-interface that offers a mix of familiar iOS visuals with polished animations and a little bit of flat Metro-esque inspiration thrown in for good measure.
The events data within the app is collated, reindexed and reorganized into a usable database from services such as Eventbrite, Eventful, MeetUp, Facebook and SeatWave to name a few. The benefit to the end-user is immediately obvious and means that all events listed on the those services are readily available in one searchable location. First time users will be treated to events that are happening on the same day as well as gatherings that have been deemed to be popular and are happening in well-known and respected venues.
The whole underlying app also has a socially connected theme running throughout it. Users can connect with one another and share events as well as benefit from a stunning real-time messaging view that allows text and images to be shared; perfect for reliving an event. The great thing about CalendApp is that digging deeper into the UI reveals new features and new ways to find things that may be of interest. The only real downside of the app is that the user interface and use of animations is definitely one that will split user opinion.
Putting that aside, the app is free to download and use, contains more events that are humanly possible to attend and looks fantastic.
