Bluetooth 6.0 Is Coming With New Apple Find My Improvements

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) has announced plans for the next big revision of the wireless connectivity protocol, with Bluetooth 6.0 set to offer new improvements that will allow for Apple’s Find My item and device tracking system to be improved.

The new Bluetooth 6.0 standard will include support for item location over further distances, potentially making Find My more accurate in the process.

It’s also set to offer additional information, with Bluetooth 6.0 set to allow Find My systems to ascertain exactly how far apart two devices are.

Notably, the announcement blog post detailing these improvements specifically calls out Find My when discussing Bluetooth Channel Sounding.

This innovation brings true distance awareness, introducing transformative benefits across various applications. The user experience of Find My solutions can be greatly improved, making it easier and faster to locate lost items. In digital key solutions, Bluetooth Channel Sounding will add a robust layer of security, ensuring that only authorized users within a specified range can unlock doors or access secure areas.

Find My currently uses a combination of Bluetooth and ultra wideband technology to help devices figure out where others are in 3D space, but the addition of new Bluetooth 6.0 support will supercharge those capabilities. However, there’s no news yet on when we can expect that Apple will begin to support Bluetooth 6.0 in its devices so there is no timescale for when these improvements will be available.
