Apple is getting ready to allow customers to walk into an Apple Store and trade in an old Mac, according to a new Bloomberg report. Currently, anyone trading a Mac in must send it off and wait for a gift card to arrive.
The move will mean Macs can be traded in in the same way iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches can for the first time, making it easier than ever to get rid of old hardware and get its value off a new product.
The new program will kick off later this month in both the United States and Canada.
The Cupertino, California—based technology giant informed retail employees that the new program will begin on June 15 in the U.S. and June 18 in Canada, according to people familiar with the matter. Customers can exchange a Mac for credit toward a new computer or apply the trade-in value to an Apple gift card.
This is the latest move in Apple’s attempts to make it easier than ever to recycle older kit and pick up something new.
Apple already offers the iPhone Upgrade Program with older iPhones being taken in every year. We’ve also heard rumors that the same program will be rolled into a larger services bundle, adding it to Apple Music, Apple TV+, AppleCare+, and more.
