Apple will announce a new pair of AirPods later this year while an updated pair of AirPods Pro will arrive with new fitness tracking capabilities next year.
That’s according to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Often correct in his claims, Gurman says that the new AirPods Pro will be the first since the earbuds were introduced in 2019 and that they will gain new motion sensors that will allow for fitness tracking of some sort.
The AirPods Pro coming next year will be the first change to that product since October 2019 and will include updated motion sensors with a focus on fitness tracking, the people said, asking not to be named because the plans are private.
In terms of standard AirPods, which have been rumored to get a refresh for months now Gurman notes that they will be announced at some point this year, stopping short of saying exactly when he expects that to happen. The new AirPods are expected to borrow heavily from the AirPods Pro design, although they won’t get the same features.
Finally, when Apple does refresh the AirPods Pro, Gurman believes that they will do away with the battery stem, making them look similar to the leaked Beats Studio Buds that recently appeared in the ears of basketballer LeBron James.
