Blizzard Entertainment has used this recent BlizzCon event to announce that it will be bringing the Diablo gaming franchise to mobile devices. At the event, designer Wayne Cheng covered the new Diablo Immortal game in an App Store segment and confirmed the action RPG.
Diablo Immortal will be the first time that Blizzard has brought the Diablo franchise to the world of mobile, and this has also been confirmed by Apple’s official App Store Twitter account in a tweet that welcomed the arrival of the title with a link to a “Diablo is Coming to iOS” story.
The game itself will be developed alongside NetEase and will contain a storyline that takes place between Diablo II and Diablo III. It’s not exactly an uplifting motivational storyline as the game focuses on Skarn, Herald of Terror, collecting individual parts of the destroyed Worldstone to try and resurrect Diablo.
It will also feature new locations, such as the Shassar Sea and will feature an impressive nine outdoor zones that are all accessible to gamers. Gamers will be able to play as a Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, Demon Hunter, Necromancer, or a Crusader, which will all feature the usual skillsets and abilities that Diablo gamers will be used to. Gamers will also be able to play as individuals or join others in the huge online world with multiple gaming modes that lend themselves perfectly to the different types of gameplay that appeal to mobile gamers.
It’s a huge step for the company to tackle the growing and profitable world of mobile but not necessarily one that fans agree with. The cinematic reveal trailer on YouTube has been met with a lot of negativity by fans, some of whom believe this Diablof Immortal game is nothing more than a reskin of a previous collaboration with NetEase Games.
A lot of the fan frustration could be down to the fact that speculation had amped up hopes that a fully-fledged Diablo IIII title could be on the way and announced during BlizzCon. This, obviously, wasn’t the case, with fans being introduced to the first title to bring the Diablo Universe to mobile.
The technology is there on mobile devices so there is no reason why Immortal can’t be an impressive experience. Let’s hope fans warm to the game once it’s released. You can head over to diabloimmortal.com/en-us/ to pre-register for the game.
