The iPhone 6 may be grabbing all of the recent headlines due to its impending announcement, but spare a thought for those who prefer to stay away from Apple’s smartphone lineup and only look to the Cupertino company for their tablet needs. The iPhone 6 may be the biggest release planned for this year, but it certainly won’t be the only Apple product we’ll see land on shelves across the world. A new concept, and one that chooses to ignore the smaller form of the iPhone, concentrates on what could potentially be in store for consumers when Tim Cook lifts the lid on the third-generation iPad mini.
We haven’t actually been witness to any concrete specification or design leaks relating to the third iPad mini just yet. Nor have we seen any component or external shell leaks being made public by any of Apple’s Far-East supply chain partners. Still, the whole point of a concept design is that it’s supposed to be a particular designer’s take on what might be about to come. Plus, there’s a few educated guesses that one can make based on the aesthetics of the iPad Air and the technology that shipped with the iPhone 5s last year.
First and foremost, the concept by Martin Hajek features a Touch ID sensor buried beneath the existing Home button, something that we can pretty much guarantee will be a part of the final release. As with the iPhone 5s and any new Apple hardware, the third-generation iPad mini concept uses the biometric scanner to allow users to unlock the device and authenticate as part of the App Store and iTunes purchasing process.
The physical design of concept, and therefore the overall aesthetics of the product, have been driven by the rumors that we’ve been hearing about the iPhone 6. The external shell design lacks any kind of imagination and is essentially a larger version of the leaked component that was said to be the rear case of the next-generation iPhone. This particular concept is also purely aesthetic, with no additional information being provided about possible internal specifications.
Not the most imaginative thing we’ve ever seen, but still, it’s a welcome distraction from all of the iPhone 6 renders we’ve been seeing.
