This week’s free “App of the Week” is a beautifully crafted 3D puzzle game released and offered to the small screen gaming world by the good people at Bedtime Digital Games. Back to Bed is a gorgeous 3D indie title set in a wonderfully weird and creative dream world. Those willing to take on the challenge will need to use all of their wits and problem solving skills to guide the sleepwalking main character, Bob, back to the comfort of his bed.
First and foremost, like the extremely visually similar Monument Valley, Back to Bed will initially win you over and derive most of its immediate appeal from the beautifully creative artistic world that the whole game is set in. The environment that Bob finds himself in during his sleep induced missions is simply gorgeous, with pixel perfect buildings and structures as well as visually stunning backdrops and scenery. A 3D puzzler is about more than visuals, granted, but it goes a long way in keeping you engrossed.
The concept of the game focusses a lot on Bob’s subconscious guardian; a charming green canine-esque animal named Subob, that users will need to master in order to guide Bob through the various puzzle challenges back into the warmth and relative safety of his slumber chamber.
The isometric puzzle levels contained within the game once again will concur up immediate similarities with the brilliant Monument Valley, but that’s not a bad thing if something makes you think about one of the great games we’ve seen on the platform to date. Puzzles will defy the law of physics in order for the gamer to manipulate the environment to achieve the desired goal.
If you happen to be a hardcore puzzle game fan and find the average puzzler a little too tame, then it’s entirely possible to unlock the hidden “Nightmare Mode”. Nightmare Mode requires the user to be constantly thinking ahead in order to solve the more challenging puzzles that are thrown into the equation. Back to Bed also offers full MFI gaming controller support for those who want to interact via a third-party controller.
