One of the most popular iOS jailbreak themes on Cydia has to be Ayecon, from Surenix. It’s been around in various guises for some time now, and has been installed on more iPhones, iPads and iPod touches than we care to guess, and we’re sure it’ll be installed on countless more too. In fact, we’re particularly confident about that now that Surenix has announced via a blog post that Ayecon for iOS 7 is almost ready for primetime.
The reason that Ayecon theme is so popular is that it takes the stock iOS icons and replaces them with a unified set of icons that often more accurately reflect what the app is that they represent. At worst the icons within Ayecon simply look nicer than their stock counterparts, and while that is certainly a decent starting point, saying that Ayecon is just a collection of icons that have had a fresh coat of paint doesn’t quite do it justice. With Ayecon being so popular, it was really only a matter of time until an iOS 7 version was made available, and according to the aforementioned blog post, the time has now come.
Writing in a blog post today, Surenix says that Ayecon for iOS 7 should release later this week, but that’s not where the story ends. Apparently, due to the way iOS 7 handles icons Surenix will need to recreate its app icons to accommodate it, which given the sheer number of apps on the App Store, isn’t a small task.
I spent the past week optimizing ayecon for iOS 7 (stock iOS icons) and it look so amazing! The only problem now is that Apple removed “AppIconOverlay@2x.png”, which give every single iOS icon that unified “ayecon” look… uh-oh, right? No
What Surenix suggests is that while new icons are being created, a PSD file will be released that should make it possible for others to also share the work. If people have an app that they must have a new icon for, they can make the required alterations and then send it in to Surenix for inclusion in Ayecon. It’s hoped that this crowdsourcing approach will cut down the time it will take for app icons to be updated, which is a good thing considering Surenix only aims to release a new icon update on a weekly basis.
And with WinterBoard for iOS 7 now also out, the announcement of Ayecon for iOS 7 couldn’t come at a much better time!
New WinterBoard update for iOS 7.
So yes, look for new Ayecon theme in Cydia later this week. We will obviously announce it here on Redmond Pie as soon as it goes live.
