The rumors of the unannounced 16-inch MacBook Pro won’t go away, suggesting there is more than enough smoke for there to be a fire somewhere at Apple.
Now notoriously on-the-ball analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, says that Apple will launch the new notebook with a scissor keyboard, rather than the ailing butterfly one we’ve all become so afraid of.
The butterfly keyboards Apple has been using in recent years have become notoriously temperamental, with rumors abound that they are to be replaced with butterfly keyboards. Kuo says that will happen when the 16-inch MacBook Pro launches in the fourth quarter of 2019 despite previously saying that the new keyboards wouldn’t debut until next year.
“We have revised our prediction that the keyboard of the 16-inch MacBook Pro that will launch in 4Q19 will feature the scissor mechanism instead of the butterfly mechanism. The refresh versions of other MacBook models in 2020 will change to adopt the scissor mechanism keyboard, too. We estimate that shipments of MacBook models that choose scissor mechanism keyboards will reach 400k, 10mn, and 16mnunits, respectively.“
The new scissor keyboards are expected to offer a better typing experience thanks to a longer key travel. They will also presumably prevent the MacBook Pro’s keyboard from failing at alarmingly regular intervals, as has bee the case with Apple’s notebooks of late. Sunrex is apparently the company tasked with making the new keyboards.
Apple debuted its ill-fated butterfly keyboard with the 2015 MacBook and has been releasing revised models ever since. So far none appear to have rectified multiple issues including keys refusing to work, or registering double taps.
