We’ve been hearing all kinds of rumors relating to iPhones, notebooks, and more of late with iOS 14 also getting in on the act. The latest rumor relates to one that we’ve actually heard before – that Apple has some over-hear headphones in the works.
According to Jon Prosser, Apple intends to announce the over-ear headphones during WWDC this June. He says that they will sell for around $350, putting them in direct competition with products from the likes of Bose, Sony, and of course, Beats.
On that front Proser says that Apple intends to phase out the Beats brand, instead choosing to put Apple logos on all headphones. There’s no indication how long that phase-out process might take, and we’re not convinced that Prosser has this one right, either.
The Beats brand sells tons of headphones and Bluetooth speakers and it’s unlikely Apple could replicate that in the short term, nor would it likely want to. Beats has a particular market and customer, leaning heavily on sports. That just isn’t really an arena Apple works in, bar the health features attached to the Apple Watch.
Regardless, rumors of Apple working on over-ear headphones just won’t die. A similar rumor relates to what Prosser calls AirPods X.
He says they’re similar to Beats X and are designed for runners. We’ve heard talk from DigiTimes of a so-called AirPods Pro Lite. They’re thought to be similar to AirPods Pro, but without the fancy noise cancellation tech. That would make a lower price possible, with Prosser suggesting a $200 pricetag is likely.
