New reports claim that Apple is giving the Apple TV another refresh, with DVR capabilities coming to the little black box according to the Wall Street Journal.
While talk of an Apple-made television has been all the rage over the last year or 5, the story took an unexpected twist yesterday when the Wall Street Journal reported that the company is working to revamp its existing Apple TV set-top box.
The report, along with an additionally note today, suggests that Apple is working to offer a redesigned Apple TV set-top box, with DVR features finally being added to the device, years after it was requested by customers. The box would not record content, though, but rather it would stream content as soon as a matter of minutes after it has begun airing on traditional television.
Currently offering streaming of content via iTunes, the Apple TV is on the periphery of Apple’s lineup, offering something that just does not fit with the way most people watch content. This may change if the Wall Street’s assertions are correct.
In order to make the jump to an Apple DVR as painless as possible for its customers, Apple is also reportedly set to adopt a more iPad-like interface. With the current offering less than ideal, and options seemingly hidden inside a labyrinth of menu options, Apple is reported to be set to plump for an iOS-like interface to help the adoption of a device that has historically been something of an enthusiast’s toy.
The problem with the whole thing. though, is the lack of content deals. Apple has been rumored to be in talks with TV companies for a good while at this point, with Apple yet to get the deal it wants.
Rumors of a television are still circling, too, and they show no sign of dying down even with the suggestion that a new Apple TV is around the corner. Just how far around that corner it is, we really do not know at this point. Maybe the Wall Street Journal knows exactly what is going on?
We don’t expect to see a new DVR-equipped Apple TV just yet, though.
