Apple announced a new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros today, complete with fast new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips inside. But it’s the power-saving capabilities of those chips that is perhaps the most impressive thing.
When announcing the new machines Apple said that buyers could expect up to 22 hours of battery life from a single charge and, predictably, that relates to the biggest model.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro has more space for bigger batteries than the 14-inch model, which explains why it goes all the way to 22 hours. And notably, that’s the longest a battery has ever lasted on a Mac as MacRumors points out.
Both of the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models offer one additional hour of battery life over their predecessors, rising from 17 to 18 hours on the 14-inch model and 21 to 22 hours on the 16-inch model. For comparison, both the M1 and M2 MacBook Air offer 18 hours of battery life, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro offers 20 hours of battery life.
One machine that doesn’t even have a battery is the Mac mini, and Apple also refreshed that today. The new Mac mini comes with the option of an M2 or M2 Pro chip inside, making it a great option for all kinds of Mac buyers who don’t need the portability of a Mac notebook.
As part of today’s refreshes Apple finally killed off the Intel i7 Mac mini, leaving the Mac Pro as the only machine still available with Intel inside.
