When Apple releases macOS Sonoma this fall we can expect it to benefit from a new feature that will make it easier for people to make Macs work again after they get stuck in DFU mode.
With macOS Sonoma installed, Apple will allow people to begin a Mac-to-Mac restoration process right from within the Finder app, MacRumors notes, with X user @aaronp613 reporting on the big news.
As they note, restoring a Mac from DFU mode previously required that people install Apple Configurator and go from there. Now, people will have everything they need — so long as they have another Mac to hand.
Restoring or reviving using Finder is basically the same process as restoring with Configurator, just without the need for additional software. The two Macs will still need to be connected to one another through a USB-C cable, and the same steps will likely apply. Both machines will need to have macOS Sonoma installed to use Finder for a restore.
Macs can sometimes find themselves stuck in DFU mode when they experience an issue during the software update process.
Those who don’t have a second Mac to begin the restoration process with will still have to visit an Apple Store for assistance, unfortunately. As for macOS Sonoma, that isn’t likely to ship to the public until September or October.
