Apple is all set to launch its M5 chip in the MacBook Pro this fall, followed by the iPad Pro in early 2026, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
This is a shift from Apple’s usual release pattern. Last year, the M4 chip debuted in the iPad Pro first, then came to the MacBook Pro. But this time, Apple is switching things up.
Before the M5 arrives, Apple plans to update the Mac Studio and Mac Pro with M4 chips, likely around WWDC in June 2025.
The M5 chip will feature an improved ARM architecture and will be built using TSMC’s 3-nanometer process. Apple reportedly chose not to use TSMC’s newer 2nm process due to cost. However, the high-end M5 versions will still bring major upgrades, thanks to a new System on Integrated Chip (SoIC) technology.
This advanced 3D chip-stacking method allows chips to be layered on top of each other, improving heat management and reducing energy loss. Apple is also working closely with TSMC to refine this technology using carbon fiber composite molding.
References to the M5 chip have already been found in Apple’s official code. Reports suggest that Apple will also use the M5 for AI-driven cloud services, enhancing both consumer devices and backend AI systems.
With all these improvements, the M5 chip is shaping up to be a big leap forward for Apple’s hardware lineup.
