Apple could be ready to ship an updated 24-inch iMac before the end of the year, according to a new report.
The company currently sells the 24-inch iMac with an M1 chip, but it’s reported that the next model will debut with a brand-new M3 chip inside.
Rumors of a new 24-inch iMac have been sparse, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman now reports that Apple could launch one by the end of this year.
While the overall shape of the iMacs isn’t expected to change, and the same color options are thought to be offered, that doesn’t mean that this new model will be exactly the same as the one currently on sale.
The new iMacs will, of course, be more powerful — with a new M-series chip to replace the M1. There also will be some behind-the-scenes changes. The computer will see some of its internal components relocated and redesigned, and the manufacturing process for attaching the iMac’s stand is different.
It’s thought that Apple will have the new models ready to go in the second half of the year, with the device already in being tested. The updated iMac isn’t expected to enter mass production for at least another three months, making a launch much later this year most likely.
The M3 chip will be the first to move to TSMC’s new 3nm manufacturing process, while the A17 chip set to be used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also follow suit. That should allow for improved thermal management and a lower power draw for the new chips.
