Apple’s new M1-powered Macs are set to go on sale later this week and some people are already taking them for a spin. That in turn means that we are seeing benchmarks of the new machines with one notable point being spotted by Tom’s Hardware – the M1 is more speedy than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and Radeon RX 560.
The M1 chip that beats at the heart of Apple’s new Macs is supposedly good for almost 25,000 threads and 2.6 TFLOPS of throughput.
That’s around the same number of TFLOPS as the aforementioned GPUs, but according to numbers provided by the GFXBench 5.0 results, it’s the M1 that performs the best.
In a clear victory, the Apple M1 bested the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti by a good margin. The Radeon RX 560 didn’t stand a chance, either. Admittedly, the two discrete gaming graphics cards are pretty old by today’s standards, but that shouldn’t overshadow the fact that M1’s integrated graphics outperformed both 75W desktop graphics cards, but within a pretty tight TDP range of its own.
This is all pretty impressive considering the M1 is an SoC rather than a discrete gaming graphics card, no matter how old the two tested might be. It’s also notable that the M1 is going to be a big upgrade for anyone who has had to deal with onboard graphics from Intel, for example.
Apple’s M1-powered MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are all available this week after being made available for pre-order last week.
