The iPhone 15 Pro might have only been on the market for a few weeks but there are already rumors about what will come next.
In truth, we were seeing iPhone 16 Pro rumors from even before the iPhone 15 Pro was released, but now a new report adds new information about what modem the updated model will have. And no, it isn’t one designed by Apple despite its best efforts.
The new chip, analyst Jeff Pu claims, will be the Snapdragon X75 modem. That’s according to a MacRumors report based on a research note of Pu’s, and it suggests that the new modem will enable something called 5G Advanced, bringing improved connectivity and the use of AI to enhance performance.
Announced in February 2023, the Snapdragon X75 features improved carrier aggregation and other technology advancements for faster 5G download and upload speeds compared to the X70. The modem’s combined mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G transceiver takes up 25% less circuit board space, and uses up to 20% less power, according to The Verge.
Interestingly, it’s claimed that Apple will only use the new modem in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, leaving the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to make do with the current X70 modem that is being used in today’s models.
Apple will of course continue to use Qualcomm modems through 2026 after it failed to get its own in-house modem ready.
