Despite everything going on in the world during the first six months of 2020, Apple’s iPhone 11 became the most-shipped phone on the planet according to new numbers provided by Omdia.
The same handset was also the most popular phone of 2020 so far, shipping an estimated 37.7 million units. For perspective, that’s almost 11 million more than last year’s best-selling product – the iPhone XR.
It’s easy to see what made the iPhone 11 so popular. A combination of capability and price makes the handset a compelling buy, whereas phones around its price point normally have one big negative. With iPhone 11, that’s not the case with the handset being able to handle everything thrown at it while also packing a best-in-class video camera. It takes pretty good still shots, too!
Samsung and Xiaomi round out the top three, with Apple accounting for five of the top ten selling smartphones of the first half of 2020. The iPhone SE helped out as well, sitting in fifth place.
According Omdia’s smartphone market tracker report, Apple shipped 13% more iPhones in the second quarter this year compare to the previous year thanks to the success of the iPhone 11 and the newly released iPhone SE.
All eyes are already on what Apple has planned for 2021, with four new iPhones set to be announced within the next few weeks. Multiple price points are again expected to be covered, too.
