Apple has released the second beta of iOS 17.2 and it brings with it a new feature that we won’t see much use for until the Vision Pro headset arrives in early 2024.
The Vision Pro headset will allow people to watch 3D video, dubbed Spatial Video, as well as record it using its built-in cameras. However, the iPhone 15 Pro will also be able to record such videos in the future — and the second iOS 17.2 beta adds support for doing just that.
The Spatial Video recording can be configured via the Settings app with a new “Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro” option available in the Formats section of the Camera settings.
Apple says that videos will be recorded at 30 frames per second at 1080p with a minute of content expected to take up around 130MB of storage. Apple also suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro must be in landscape mode when recording.
Spatial Videos recorded on an iPhone 15 Pro will appear as standard 2D videos when viewed on devices that aren’t the Vision Pro, so you could start capturing things that way now if you think Apple’s mixed reality headset is in your future.
Apple hasn’t yet said when the Vision Pro headset will go on sale, but it’s set for an early 2024 release. As for this 17.2 release, that’s likely to be released to the public next month.
